The history of Américo Duarte Paixão, Lda. dates back to the beginning of the 1940s in the village of Vale da Trave, parish of Alcanede, municipality of Santarém. It originated with Mrs. Celeste Emília da Conceição, who went through the fields to collect the plants that grew spontaneously in the Natural Park of Serras de Aire e Candeeiros (PNSAC). It also carried out its drying, sorting and storage, before being able to sell these plants to the Antiga Ervanária da Anunciada in Lisbon. At that time, through an exporter in Lisbon and another in Porto, the supply of large quantities of rosemary leaves began. This was the beginning of a prosperous commercial relationship, with up to 100 tons being harvested per year, destined for the United States of America.

From the 1960s onwards, with the entry of his son-in-law Américo Duarte Paixão, the business became familiar, investing in better transport and telecommunications conditions. In 1980, with the entry of a new family generation, the import and export of products was developed. Thus, this company was the first in Portugal to initiate direct commercial relations with India. In addition to the USA, the first exports were also to the United Kingdom, starting an increasingly accentuated progress, which allowed the expansion to other countries, such as Germany, Spain, France and Angola. In view of the renewed interest in Phytotherapy, together with the increase in scientific research on medicinal plants that took place in Portugal, in 2006 the restructuring and modernization of the company Américo Duarte Paixão, Lda. was put into practice. , the implementation of the HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Points) and the taking of many other measures, it was possible to obtain its Quality Certification, in the scope of the transformation, handling and packaging of medicinal plants, by Bureau Veritas, in accordance with the ISO 9001 standard.

The facilities of Américo Duarte Paixão, Lda. are located, even today, in Vale da Trave, in the heart of PNSAC. In this village, nicknamed "Land of Herbs", surrounded by a rich fauna and flora typical of this region, qualified professionals work to meet the demands of its consumers, providing quality products, nationally and internationally. A good image, rigorous work and customer satisfaction contribute to the prestigious reputation that Américo Duarte Paixão, Lda. has acquired over the years, in an activity that is probably as old as the existence of man – the use of medicinal plants for a healthier life.

OUR SERVICES

Upon receipt of the raw material in the warehouse, the organoleptic properties, weight and moisture are checked. The acceptance or rejection of batches depends on meeting the required quality requirements.

Depending on the type of order, the raw material can go to the Cutting, Milling or directly to the Purging operations, which consists of a fumigation method that is carried out in a confined environment and isolated from other substances. At the end of this operation, the raw material goes to the warehouse, where it is stored in the semi-finished product area.

The Manual Selection of raw materials is a transversal step to the entire production system and, despite the detection of metals carried out in the packaging rooms, magnetic devices are used that perform surface scanning on the selection table. all particles foreign to the processed raw material are rejected, so that they do not jeopardize the quality and safety of the product when consumed.
